Overview

The problem

Legalpath had strong retention among power users but was losing new customers fast — 61% dropped off before completing a single meaningful action in their first two weeks.

The solution

A goal-based onboarding flow that surfaced value in under 3 minutes. Navigation restructured around jobs-to-be-done. A contextual help system replaced static docs that nobody read.

Research & discovery

Understanding the problem space

We analysed 6 months of Amplitude event data and ran moderated sessions with 18 new users across three customer segments. The core finding: users didn’t understand what the product was for until they’d already given up. Onboarding assumed too much prior knowledge and offered no progressive guidance.

Key findings

Search paralysis

Users spent an average of 15 minutes just locating the correct compliance templates because the search architecture relied on exact-match file names.

No bulk processing

Legal teams had to approve documents one by one. The inability to select and approve in bulk added hours of repetitive clicking to their weekly workload.

Navigation fatigue

Core workflow features were buried four clicks deep. Moving the most utilized tools to a persistent sidebar was explicitly requested by every single interviewed user.

Design process

Creating lofi designs

We sketched 12 concepts across three directions — unified timeline, role-based dashboards, and a structured handover form. Role-based dashboards tested strongest in paper prototype sessions.
